best. ff. ever.
So. Update: My roommate came out to me as transgender (identifies as female, born as a biological male). She has my full support. I love her. Anyone who hurts her in any way because she discovered who she is will receive the appropriate level of bitch from me. Fair warning.
“Gamer” Girls

True fact.

LOL. I see what you did there. Now, hand me a sniper rifle. I’ll get rid of that for you.
Pretty much a few of the girls I know.
Let me get my P90…
There was something really problematic about this comic to me and it made me feel uneasy though I couldn’t really articulate why. Looking in the notes and seeing some of the blatant misogyny and femmephobia on display tells me my gut feeling was right.
Side-eyeing a whole motherfucking bunch of people rn.
RIGHT?! Like…have you ever actually met someone like this? Really?
Are they really such a pervasive and ever-present problem in your gaming life that you have to bring up how much you hate them at every turn? Quiz every woman you meet who says she’s a gamer so that you can deem her worthy of a title that men don’t get similarly interrogated for claiming?
I ranted about this sort of thing on Dreamwidth a while back and I’mma repost it here when I find it again. But needless to say this kind of shit is why, despite being a lifelong gamer (as in, my first console was a Colecovision), I am constantly having to prove my cred. And why I was so hesitant to claim a femme identity for so long, tbh.
Having been an employee at GameStop, which by the way RARELY employs women, I have to say fuck people who disagree with this. These types of females are the reason why my gamer cred is constantly in question. I literally got regulated to advising the DS games because they didn’t realize my expertise was in the 360 and PS3 gaming libraries.
And you know what? I can’t stand females who claim to be “gamers” but only use their PS3 for Netflix and Blu-Ray and perhaps one Call of Duty game that an ex-boyfriend forgot about while fucking them in their home. And then they come online and brag about what a gamer they are and can’t even talk shop with anyone because they just did it to “impress the boys”. Be a gamer because you have a genuine passion for it, not to impress people. Most of these types of females don’t even know what MLG stands for, and don’t even realize professional gaming is a legit sport, now.
Also, GameStop lowkey discriminates against female employees. If you don’t fit the mold of the stereotypical “girl gamer” (meaning, if you don’t look like you haven’t brushed your hair in ages and you look like you fell into a Hot Topic clearance rack), they don’t let you work up front on the floor as much. I don’t look like what one would “expect” of a girl gamer, but I can talk shop with the best of them, and I’ve been gaming since I got my hands on the original Prince of Persia game in the late 80s/early 90s and haven’t stopped since.
This wouldn’t even be an issue if this wasn’t such a fuel for the constant misogyny I run into from male gamers lumping me in with these empty-headed pieces of fluff that are becoming more and more common.
I am not really sure how you’re not seeing that this kind of shit is misogynistic too and props up the exact kind of shit that bothers you, other than you’ve been wading in the muck so long that you can’t see this divide and conquer shit for what it is. You don’t have to tell me a damn thing about GameStop and how they treat female employees and customers, because I worked there. When it was called Software Etc. and you could only find one in the occasional mall.
Because you know what happens? I go into GameStop or gaming events and get stink eyes unless I’m wearing the proper uniform (an appropriately ironic nerd-related shirt and jeans). I get told “I don’t look like a real gamer” by people—male and female—who weren’t even born yet when I started gaming, who assume when I preorder Dissidia that my first Final Fantasy game was 10 (when I played them in order of Japanese release (including 2, 3, and 5), who profess to be Halo fans but don’t know what the fuck Marathon is (I still have the demo CD of the original one). I get assumptions made about me and my level of expertise when I buy, say, the latest Sims expansion and then their heads explode when I pre-order the next Assassin’s Creed. I get people assuming that because I play WoW, I must be my boyfriend’s pocket healer (I’m dating a woman, and I *tank* for her). All of the above fuckery increases exponentially if I happen to walk in wearing a skirt and/or makeup. And you seriously think this isn’t about misogyny and can’t connect the dots?
That entire second paragraph is chock full of so much misogyny I don’t even know where to start unpacking it. How are these “empty-headed pieces of fluff” any different from the Bros who play nothing but Madden and Halo? I mean, really? They’re just as obnoxious. They’re just as shallow. They’re just as phony. Do you think any of those motherfuckers know what MLG is, either?
So why don’t we have comic after comic, rant after screed about them, when I run into them far, far more often than I do the “Gamer Girl” strawwoman? Every subculture that becomes mainstream has its poseurs and bandwagon jumpers. Gaming is not a unique or special snowflake in this regard. Critique that behavior. I don’t even care if you critique the gendered way it manifests. But when it descends into this kind of caricature you are damn skippy I’m going to disagree and call it on the misogynistic bullshit it is. Because I have literally seen this exact kind of rhetoric in every single subculture that is dominated by men. At some point you have to ask yourself what the real underlying issue is. And guess what? It’s misogyny!
Why is it that women—particularly feminine-presenting women—are constantly subject to this kind of vitriol, and forced to submit to litmus tests to prove their True Fan status, to a level that men never are? Whether it’s gaming, or comic book fandom, or sci-fi book fandom, or sports fandom, or film buffs, or car enthusiasts, it doesn’t matter what it is, if it’s a male-coded hobby by society (ie anything other than crafting or fashion which are Appropriate Lady Interests) women get treated like constantly interrogated about our presence. There is a pattern here. A really shitty pattern.
Reblogging for truth.
Don’t know what MLG is. Must not be real gamer. Must have imagined playing six or seven new games in past month. Also, job must be imaginary.
I think that makes you a magical figment of our collective imagination. Like a majestic writerly unicorn galloping across a glittering road created by David Gaider when he accidentally spilled his coffee mug of fan tears. Or something.
I have no clue what MLG is either…
Major League Gaming.
OBVIOUSLY YOU PEOPLE ARE NOT REALLY GAMERS
(yeah how about no)Can I use this post as a prime example of why people should have their dictionaries taken away from them so they can stop using words like “misogyny”. This is just ridiculous at this point. Not everything that points out bad traits in certain females is misogyny; I wonder exactly how many people have really suffered at the hands of truly misogynist individuals.
It’s not fun.
I have more issues with the reblogs than I do with the actual comic.
“His icecream flew out of his bottle head and proceeded to fill up her insides gloriously.”
